UBCO – 14 years plus and counting

I spoke to Barrie McCullough recently.  Barry teaches at UBCO and is on the board of governors.  He advised that there was a “ride in” along Hwy 97 in 1994 complete with police escorts.  The purpose was to draw attention to the dangers of the Ellison overpass for cyclists.  At that time the Dept. of Transportation told the cyclists that they could not improve the Ellison overpass because cantilevering a bike lane off the east side  would be too expensive.   Barrie recalled that they quoted a figure of $50,000 to do the work.

This is one of the proposals that we brought to the Dept. of Transportation last year when we asked them to make the area “bike friendly”.

How long does it take to get action from these people?  Indications that it takes more than 14 years!!  It certainly took no where near as long to get the motor vehicle oriented (and much more expensive) flyover project finished.
