Something different – wooden bikes.

by

Lee Valley Tools has an excellent article on a student and his fully wood bike (functional not sculpture). You can find it here:

The bike has a chain made entirely from wood along with a wooden freewheel.

There are a number of other websites showing wooden bikes – particularly recumbents but none of the ones I have seen are made entirely from wood. Here are a few interesting ones:

http://bikerodnkustom.homestead.com/woodeye.html – a number of mostly wood bikes – very nice.

http://mysite.verizon.net/res88kr1/ – plans for several wooden recumbents.

http://www.blids.nl/gallery/Plywood-Recumbent-Building-workshop-2003 – the author visited Kelowna in February 2002 for the spaghetti bridge building contest. Lots of excellent bike links at the bottom of the page.

In the summer of 2006 we were camping in Hope and spoke to a fellow who had an old car on a trailer. He showed me a set of bike wheels that he had obtained with the car – the rims were made of laminated wood, spokes and hub from steel. This was common in the 1930’s or so apparently. They were about the size of a regular 10 speed wheel.
